申請書に記載したように本年度は新型コロナの影響で途上国のフィールドに行っての調査研究が実現しなかったため、これまでに収集済みのデータ及び政府・国際機関が公開しているデータを用いた、論文執筆を中心とした研究に取り組んだ。その結果、4本の論文を出版することが出来た。第1に、ベトナム戦争時にラオス国内において米軍によって行われた爆撃の、経済発展への長期的な影響の論文がJournal of Development Economicsに掲載されることが決定した。第2に、ミャンマーで長期間にわたって散発的に発生する紛争の教育への影響を分析した論文がJournal of Asian Economicsに掲載された。第3に、ベトナムのフエ近郊の村内における環境に配慮した新技術導入における近隣効果を検証した論文がWorld Development Perspectivesに掲載された。第4に、ミャンマーにおけるベテル(噛みたばこの一種)消費に関して、消費者の属性や消費量を分析した論文がInternational Journal of Drug Policyに掲載された。これらの成果を踏まえると、それなりに大きな研究成果を出したと考えられる。
また、上述した出版されたもしくは出版が決定した論文以外にも、幾つか現在国際的専門誌に投稿中の論文があることにも付言しておきたい。具体的には(A)ベトナムの経済特区新設の経済的効果を検証した論文、(B)ベトナム共産党リーダーの出身地と企業立地行動の関係を検証した論文、(C)ミャンマーのヤンゴンの売春婦の危険回避選好と性商売における意思決定を分析した論文、(D)同じ売春婦のデータを用いてのどこで性商売をするかによる価格差の要因を分析した論文、(E)インドにおける大気汚染と新型コロナウイルスによる死亡の間の因果関係に関する論文、などが該当する。これらの論文はそれぞれの専門誌からの採択の可否の結果待ちの状態であるが、その連絡に基づいて出版にこぎつけるように引き続き努力していく次第である。
As stated in the application form, I was unable to conduct field research in developing countries this academic year due to COVID-19, so I focused on writing research papers using the data I had already collected and the data released by governments and international organizations. As a result, I was able to publish four papers. First, a paper on the long-term effects on economic development of the bombing of Laos by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Development Economics. Second, a paper analyzing the impact on education of long-term sporadic conflicts in Myanmar has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Asian Economics. Third, a paper examining the neighborhood effects of the introduction of new environmentally friendly technologies in two villages near Hue, Vietnam was published in World Development Perspectives. Fourth, a paper analyzing consumer attributes and consumption of betel (a type of chewing tobacco) in Myanmar was published in the International Journal of Drug Policy. In light of these results, it can be considered that I have produced significant research results.
In addition to the above-mentioned papers that have been published or are to be published, I would also like to add that I have several papers that are currently being submitted to international journals. Specifically, (A) a paper examining the economic effects of the establishment of a new special economic zone in Vietnam, (B) a paper examining the relationship between the hometown of the leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam and business location behavior, (C) a paper analyzing the risk-averse preferences of prostitutes in Yangon, Myanmar and their decision-making in sex work, (D) a paper using the same data of prostitutes on investigating price differentials depending on where the sex transaction is conducted, and (E) a paper on the causal relationship between air pollution and deaths from COVID-19 in India. These papers are still awaiting the results of acceptance or rejection from the respective journals, but I will continue my efforts to publish them based on the communication with the corresponding journals.
