現在のドイツで有数の日本文化研究家・美術品収集家であるChristoph Peters氏は、日本文化に関する著書や日本文化を重要なモチーフとした小説を多く発表しているにも関わらず、諸事情でこれまで来日したことはなかった。本研究プロジェクトの主たる活動は、このPeters氏を日本に招聘し、日本の国土や様々な都市、文化施設を訪れてもらい、その体験と印象について討論するという、ある種の文学的実験であった。さらには、Peters氏にその経験をもとにした文学作品を書いてもらい、それを粂川とJochが現代文学研究者として分析するというのが計画の趣旨であった。申請者たちは、もうひとりの重要なドイツ人小説家であるThomas Brussig氏が11月初旬に東京で開催されたヨーロッパ文芸フェスティバルに招聘されたのに合わせてPeters氏も日本に招き、慶應義塾大学において、しばしばBrussig氏も交えながら、「ドイツ文学に現れた日本のイメージ」について討論を行った。その一部は、学部および大学院の授業としても行われた。
Peters氏と日本各地の文化施設を見学し、議論を重ねることは、当初想定していた以上に、現代における異文化需要の形式と内実を考える重要な手がかりになった。すなわち、Peters氏はこれまで日本に来たことはなかったとはいえ、書物やインターネットを使って手に入る情報は日本国内に住んでいるほとんどの人間よりも豊富に、貪欲に収集していたし、多くの日本産・日本式の家財道具や芸術品を所有し、バルト海沿岸には焼き物の窯さえ持っていた。同氏は、ドイツにいながらにして、十分に深く日本文化の中に生きていたのである。Peters氏の日本初訪問における経験の多くは、既に知っていることを確かめることであった。東京や京都の街並みでさえ、同氏はGoogleのストリートビューを通して相当程度把握していた。タクシーの運転手を道案内することさえできたのである。
それでいて、Peters氏にとっても、日本に来なければ経験的なかった「日本文化」があったという。それを、同氏は今小説に書いている。この小説の最初の二つの章はすでに電子メールで送っていただいてある。現在申請者たちはこれを読み、翻訳と研究の対象としようとしているところである。
Christoph Peters, one of Germany's leading scholars of Japanese culture and art collectors today, had never been to Japan before due to various circumstances, despite the fact that he has written many books on Japanese culture and published many novels with Japanese culture as an important motif. The main activity of this research project was a literary experiment of sorts, inviting Peters to Japan to visit the country and its various cities and cultural institutions and to discuss his experiences and impressions. Furthermore, the plan was to have Peters write a literary work based on his experience, which Kumekawa and Joch would analyze as researchers of contemporary literature. The applicants invited Peters to Japan to coincide with the invitation of another important German novelist, Thomas Brussig, to the European Literary Festival in Tokyo in early November, and they discussed "Japanese images in German literature" at Keio University, often with Brussig. Some of them were also taught as undergraduate and graduate courses.Visiting and discussing cultural institutions across Japan with Peters provided more important clues to consider the forms and realities of contemporary cross-cultural demand than I had initially anticipated. In other words, even though Mr. Peters had never been to Japan before, he was a voracious collector of information available through books and the Internet, more than most people in Japan, owned many Japanese and Japanese-style household goods and artifacts, and even had a pottery kiln on the Baltic coast. Much of Peters' experience on his first visit to Japan was to confirm what he already knew: that he had lived deeply enough in Japanese culture to be in Germany. Even the streets of Tokyo and Kyoto, he had a considerable grasp of them through Google's Street View. He was even able to guide the taxi driver down the road.
And yet, for Peters, too, there was a "Japanese culture" that he never would have experienced if he hadn't come to Japan. He has now written a novel about it. The first two chapters of this novel have already been emailed to me. The applicants have now read it and are in the process of making it the subject of translation and research.
