従来、画家パブロ・ピカソが画家としての自己形成期にプラド美術館で行った模写は、スペイン美術の巨匠からアカデミック絵画を学び取る契機となったと解釈されてきた。しかし、プラド美術館の模写申請リストを確認していくと、エル・グレコやゴヤ、ベラスケスといった巨匠たちとの関わり方は一様ではないことが判明する。
研究ではまず、模写に関する先行研究を検証した。この作業によって、頻繁に引用される、いくつかの証言（ピカソ本人の言葉を含む）が信憑性に乏しいことを確認できた。
次に、マドリードのプラド美術館において模写申請リストを実見した。このリストと現存作品を比較することで、ピカソがベラスケスの《フェリペ四世》や《織女たち》の一部を模写した時期を特定することができた。ゴヤの模写に関しては、油彩の模写を制作した形跡がないことを踏まえたうえで、素描のなかに現存するゴヤ作品の模写が、ゴヤの版画集そのものではなく、版画集の下絵素描を模写したものであることを明らかにした。そして原図が不明だったペペ・イーリョの肖像画の原画を特定した。エル・グレコに関しては、ピカソが模写を行った形跡がプラド美術館に残っていないものの、ピカソが他の画家の作品の模写を行っていた時期にムダルニズマの画家サンティアゴ・ルシニョールやラモン・ピチョットがエル・グレコの代表作のひとつ《胸に手を置く騎士》を模写したことが判明し、その模写を後にピカソが戯画化したことと繋がっていることを提示した。
研究の成果は、エル・グレコの模写に関する部分について2019年12月に西洋美術館で開かれた冬季研究会で「ピカソとエル・グレコ：ムダルニズマとの最初の接点」と題する研究発表を行い、研究の全体を包括する論文が『ピカソと人類の美術』に掲載されることになっている。
Traditionally, Pablo Picasso's reproductions at the Museo del Prado during his formative years as a painter have been interpreted as an opportunity to learn academic painting from the masters of Spanish art. However, a review of the Prado Museum's list of requests for copies reveals that the relationship with such masters as El Greco, Goya, and Velázquez was not uniform.
The study first examined previous researches on Picasso's copies and found that some frequently cited testimonies (including Picasso's own words) were less than credible.
Next, I saw the list of copy applications at the Prado Museum in Madrid. By comparing this list with the extant works, it was possible to determine when Picasso copied parts of Velasquez's "Felipe IV" and "Las Hilanderas". With regard to Goya's copies, based on the fact that there is no evidence that he produced a copy of an oil painting, I clarified that the surviving copies of Goya's work in the drawings of Picasso are not of the prints themselves, but of the drawings for the prints. I then identified the original painting of Pepe Illo's portrait, the original of which was unknown. As for El Greco, although there are no traces of Picasso's copying at the Museo del Prado, I suggested that it was discovered that Modernist painters Santiago Rusiñol and Ramon Pichot copied one of El Greco's masterpieces, Knight with his hand on his chest, during the period when Picasso was copying other painters' works, and that this was connected to Picasso's later caricature of this work.
The results of his research will be presented at the Winter Study Conference at the Museum of Western Art in December 2019 on the part concerning El Greco's copies, entitled "Picasso and El Greco: The First Contact with Modernisme," and a paper that will be published in a book titled "Picasso and the Art of Mankind", which will encompass the entire study.
