近年特に現代美術の分野で注目されている研究課題である展覧会史研究のひとつとして「東京ビエンナーレ 1970:人間と物質」展についての実証的研究に取り組んでいる。
国内外40人の出品作家のうち存命作家についての調査を優先して実施した。国内作家については、各種資料の調査、及びインタビューなどを行った。特に河口龍夫に関しては、コミッショナー中原祐介と特に関係が深かったことから、同展出品に関する事案に留まらずより大きな文脈での所見を得ることができた。また、展覧会記録者の立場としての安齊重男、中嶋興に関する調査も行った。安齊重男はこれまでも継続的に調査を行っており、資料の提供も受けている。中嶋興については、本年アート・センターで展示を行い、その資料が一部寄託されるに至っている。これら記録者の仕事は近年高く評価されているが、展覧会史研究の観点から極めて重要である。
更に、昨年に引き続き、開催年である1970年についての関連調査、資料研究なども進めた。
2月には、ニューヨークにて、ニューヨーク近代美術館、ホイットニー美術館や関係画廊で関連作家の調査を行った。特にリチャード・セラのスタジオでの現地調査を行い、情報交換により、セラのアーカイヴにこれまでの「東京ビエンナーレ1970」に関する研究成果とアート・センターのアーカイヴ資料をもって貢献することもできた。3月には質問状によるインタビューが実現する予定であったが、コロナ禍のために残念ながら進行が停滞しており、引き続き2020年度に調査を続行していく所存である。
昨年度に引き続き重視している発信に関しては、昨年、発信準備を進めた過去にテートで行ったシンポジウを正式にデジタル公開した（Tate Research Centre: Asia 協力）。この動画および昨年公開した展示再構成にアクセスしての関連作家や同展に関する研究的問い合わせがあり、そこから発展しての研究的フィードバックも更に期待されるところである。
Research on "Tokyo Biennale 1970: Between Man and Matter" in the context of Exhibition Histories.
The researcher(Yohko Watanabe) gave priority to a survey of living artists out of 40 exhibitors. She conducted research on archival materials and documents and interviews with domestic artists. Tatsuo Kawaguchi, who had a close relationship with the commissioner, Yusuke Nakahara, provided insights in a broader context than just the case for the exhibition concerned. She also researched Shigeo Anzai (photographer) and Ko Nakajima (photographer and video artist), who were the exhibition-recorders/-witnesses. She has continued to research Shigeo Anzai and has been provided his archival materials. This year, Nakajima exhibited his pieces at KUAC and some of his archival materials were deposited. Their work has been highly valued in recent years and is extremely important from the viewpoint of Exhibition Histories.
Besides, she conducted related surveys and research about the year-1970, when the exhibition concerned was held.
In February, she conducted a survey of related artists at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and related galleries in New York. She conducted a survey at Richard Serra's studio. She was able to contribute to Sera's archive through research results on "Tokyo Biennale 1970", and archival materials from KUAC. A questionnaire type interview was scheduled for March, but unfortunately, it has unfinished due to the COVID-19. She intends to continue the investigation in FY 2020.
Regarding information dissemination, a related symposium held at Tate Modern was digitally published (in cooperation with Tate Research Center Asia). By accessing this video, and exhibition reconstruction published last year, we have research inquiries about this exhibition and related artists, we hope for further research feedback.
