Laser-cooled atomic ions in ion traps are expected to be applied to basic physics studies such as qubits of quantum computers and realization of precise atomic clocks. For such purpose, efficient ion loading into the ion trap is necessary. Usually, neutral atomic beams are introduced into the trap, and the ionization is carried out inside the trap. In the past, two main approaches to ionization have been implemented. One is impact ionization by thermal electrons, and the other is two-photon ionization by lasers. Collisional ionization of thermal electrons is not a suitable method for the above-mentioned applications, such as vacuum contamination. Laser photoionization has great advantages such as isotope selectivity and less contamination of the vacuum system, but has the disadvantage of low ion generation efficiency.
In this study, as a novel ionization method, one-photon photoionization using incoherent light has been carried out, and laser cooling of barium ions has been actually performed. One-photon ionization occurs more often than two-photon ionization, and therefore it has high generation efficiency. Moreover, no lasers are required for ionization, and the vacuum contamination is minimized.
Ultraviolet light is required for one-photon ionization. In this study, deuterium lamp and deep ultraviolet light emitting diode (UVLED) are used. Deuterium lamps generate ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 185 nm and longer. Since it has energy higher than the ionization energy of barium, it can be used for one-photon ionization. In UVLED, we try to ionize barium atoms using UVLEDs with wavelengths of 350 nm, 280 nm and 245 nm. While photon energy of UVLEDs with 350 nm and 280 nm is less than the ionization energy, 245 nm emits photons that is roughly the same as the ionization energy. Hence, one-photon ionization is expected. As a result, it has been confirmed that barium ions are indeed loaded into the ion trap by the deuterium lamp and the UV LED of wavelength 245 nm.
