Abstract 
19世紀半ばの東部インド塩市場では、在来のベンガル塩がチェシア塩にとってかわられるという大きな変容が生じた。本研究では、東部インド塩市場の変容が、イギリス東インド会社統治(塩独占制度)およびイギリス製塩業・海運利害の強力な圧力によってのみ引き起されたのではなく、現地の文化、生態環境、経済といった複合的要因(とくに嗜好、燃料市場、商家経営)が塩種間の競争と淘汰をもたらした結果生じたことを明らかにした。
