本稿はこれまで本誌に記してきた日本橋の町々に続いて,かなり史的に特徴をもつ現在の八重洲1丁目,以前の西河岸町・呉服町・元大工町・数寄屋町・檜物町・上槇町の6つの町-江戸時代には呉服橋御門外の西の一郭-について,その街並みを商業史の視点から取りあげるものである。江戸時代初期,特に江戸城造成の頃は,この一郭は騒然たる建築資材などの荷揚げ場であったが,この完成と大名屋敷ができあがるにつれ,ここに町屋が形成され,多くの御用達商人が屋敷を拝領するなどして移り住み,また国役の職人が集団居住するに至る。しかし,江戸市中
