| Abstract |
In this study, we develop a new water polo world ranking system, and compare it to the ranking published by FINA. The proposed ranking system is calculated using the Elo rating method, based mainly on win-loss information, while also considering score information. In particular, the method based on a sigmoid function showed high accuracy in terms of winning predictions, and a high rank correlation coefficient with the tournament rank. In addition, this method is able to identify possible instances of matches being fixed in order to obtain a higher tournament ranking.
