本年度は〈近代ジャーナリズムの文化史的文脈〉の解明を第一の目標に研究を進めた。具体的には, 伝統的な「暦」に庶民向けの娯楽的・教育的要素を加えた近世以来の「暦物語」, および, キリスト教の教会暦にもとづく連作詩(Jahreszyklus)の系譜に着目し, 19世紀のジャーナリズム興隆の背景を探った。交通・通信技術の飛躍的な発展と, フランス革命による歴史的な正統性の断絶の経験を経た19世紀を, 歴史家ラインハルト・コゼレックの有名なテーゼに従って「迅速化」の時代としてとらえるとき, 〈一年〉という円環的なサイクルを単位とする伝統的な時間意識は, まさしくその流れに逆行するものとして理解される。この観点に立つとき, ともに19世紀前半に広範な支持を得た二人の文筆家, ヨハン・ペーター・ヘーベルとカール・グツコーは, 興味深い対照をなしている。前者がその「暦物語」を通じて, 〈一年〉という周期的に反復する時間軸のなかで意味を保ち続ける言葉の耐久性への信頼を固持するのに対し, 後者はそうした言葉の永続的な価値ではなく, むしろ日常的な消費物としてのきわめて鮮度の高い言葉を志向しているからである。両者に見られるこの対極的な態度は, 当時の文筆活動が二つの時間意識のあいだで揺れ動くものであったことを示唆している。
こうした考察の過程で, ジャーナリズムの文脈からは外れるものの, この時間意識の振幅の葛藤を如実に体現する事例として, 女性詩人アネッテ・フォン・ドロステ＝ヒュルスホフの連作詩集『教会の一年』(1851)が歴史的に見て重要な位置を占めるテクストである可能性が浮上した。本年度は, まだこの仮説を論文の形で発表するには至らなかったが, 私的な研究会での報告などを経て, 次年度の日本独文学会春季研究発表会で口頭発表をおこなう具体的な見通しが得られたことは, 大きな研究成果だったといえる。
The primary purpose of the research of this year was to reveal the context of the modern journalism from the standpoint of the cultural history. According to the German historian Reinhart Koselleck, one of the characteristics of the 19th century is a tendency of "acceleration", which is contrary to the tradition of the 'calendar stories (Kalendergeschichten)' or the collections of lyrical poems based on the Christian year (Jahreszyklus) since the baroque era. In the first half of the century this contrast is clearly represented by two major writers in Germany, Johann Peter Hebel and Karl Gutzkow. The former holds on to trust in durable effects of words by writing the 'calendar stories' to enlighten the common people, while the latter insists on their actual values in the sense of daily journalism. In other words, they show the two poles of the time-consciousness of the writers at that time.
In this context, an anthology of lyrical poems by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff "Spiritual Year (Geistliches Jahr)" seems to be one of the most important texts that express the problems of time as the typical ones of the literary activities of those days, although not necessarily journalistic. I have not yet published a research paper about it, but having once spoken of this theme in a colloquium, there is now a prospect of the proof of my hypothesis and I plan also to present a paper at the next conference of the Japanese Society for German Studies, which can be an achievement of this year without doubt.
