Previous studies on antipiracy campaigns have discussed that the idea to suppress piracy was born in modern nation-states in Europe and they put this idea into practice in Asia. However, this research project emphasizes that in the early imperial period European states did not have clear policies against pirates, and that after their advancement into Asia they made complicated negotiations and compromises with various local actors, on the basis of their economic interests rather than their concept of states. I negotiated with the Dutch publisher Brill to publish the research results of this project as an edited volume, and have agreed with them to publish it in April 2018.
