20世紀前半に植物の形態や色彩を記録する目的で植植物栽培家や自然科学者が撮影した植物写真は, 個々の植物を体系的に認知するために考案された「分類学」に基づく標本に類似している。そして, 1920年代から1930年代に展開した「新即物主義」を代表する写真家で植物学者Karl Blossfeldt(1865-1932)による植物写真は, 美術史研究においてはもっぱら芸術写真として語られるが, きわめて科学的な眼をもって自然の対象を撮影しているという点では, それらは植物栽培家や自然科学者の, 分類学的な特徴を示す記録写真と共通性をもつ。この点を重視し, Blossfeldtと, 多年生植物栽培家・庭園思想家カール・フェルスターKarl Foerster(1874-1970)の手になる植物写真の比較検討を行った。Foersterは, 植物のカラー写真を最初に掲載したことで知られるモダニズムの重要な園芸雑誌『庭園の美 Gartenschönheit』(1920年発刊)の主宰者である。調査の過程で, Blossfeldtのきわめて珍しい初期写真が『庭園の美Gartenschönheit』誌に掲載されている事実が判明した。
ところで, Blossfeldtの植物写真にみとめられる自然科学的な特性は, 20世紀の「新即物主義」以前における彼の活動と無関係ではない。1890年代に彼が助手をつとめたベルリン美術工芸学校においては, 比較植物研究の教材として, 植物を題材とした素描, 版画, 標本, 写真, 模型が活用されており, Blossfeldtはそうした教材の制作を担当していた。とかくBlossfeldtに関しては20世紀の新即物主義的な写真ばかりがクローズアップされて論じられる傾向にあるが, むしろ19世紀における活動の延長線上に20世紀の植物写真を位置づけることによって, 植物栽培家や自然科学者の植物写真と彼の写真が類似している必然性が明確化された。そしてこのことからも, 近代の植物写真について「芸術と自然科学」の接合という観点からさらに検討する必要があると認識された。
Plant photos photographed by plant growers and natural scientists for the purpose of recording plant morphology and color in the first half of the 20th century have resemblant character which specimens based on "taxonomy" devised for systematically recognizing individual plants have. And, Karl Blossfeld (1865-1932) who is a botanist and a photographer representing "New Objectivity" developed in the 1920s and 1930s is told exclusively as an art photograph in the research of art history, but in terms of photographing natural objects with scientific eyes, his photos have a commonality with recorded pictures showing the taxonomic features by plant growers and natural scientists. Focusing on this point, I compared plant photos by Blossfeldt with those by Karl Foerster (1874-1970) who is a important german perennial plant grower and garden thinker. Foerster is the president of modernist's important gardening magazine "Garden Beauty (Gartenschönheit)" (published in 1920), which is known for publishing color photographs of plants for the first time. In the course of the investigation, it turned out the fact that Blossfeldt's very rare early photograph was published in that magazine " Garden Beauty (Gartenschönheit)".
By the way, the natural scientific characteristics found in Blossfeldt's botanical photograph are related to his activities before 'New Objectivity' in the 20th century. At the School of Arts and Crafts in Berlin where he worked as an assistant in the 1890s, sketches, prints, specimens, photographs, and models using plants as objects were used as teaching materials for comparative plant research, and Blossfeldt made those materials. In regard to Blossfeldt, only photographs of New Objectivity in the 20th century tend to be discussed, but rather by locating his plant photographs of the 20th century on the extension of activities in the 19th century, the necessity that a plant photograph of a natural scientist or plant cultivators and his photograph are similar was clarifeid. And also, it was recognized that there is a need to further study on modern plant photos from the viewpoint of joining "art and natural science".
