本研究では19世紀イギリスの労働者教育の中での芸術教育に焦点を絞り、その内容が応用芸術やコミュニティ創造に対してどのように作用したのかについて調査した。
具体的には、労働者大学、実業工芸学校、大学拡張運動、トインビー・ホールにおける芸術教育を取り上げ、それらの中で実際に教育に関わったジョン・ラスキン、ラファエル前派、ウィリアム・モリスたちの活動を中心に当時の労働者教育の内容を調べた。そののちにそれらの教育と思想がモリス商会を中心とした応用芸術や装飾芸術にいかに影響を与えたのかを跡付けた。
最終的に19世紀の芸術教育が、21世紀のコミュニティ再生に及ぼす影響力と意義をも考察することができた。
This research has focused on working class art education in Victorian England, and how it has had an influence on decorative art and on creating communities.
The institutions and movements that were the subjects of analysis include the Working Men's College, Industrial Schools, the University Extension Movement and Toynbee Hall. The research analyzed the educational methods and contents adopted by John Ruskin, Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood members, and William Morris, and how their educational methods and ideals impacted both decorative art and the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Furthermore, the research undertaken has revealed that art education in the Victorian Era continued to maintain its strong influence on the concept of the "creative city" in the 20th century, and indeed on the role of art in regenerating our society during the current pandemic.
