本研究で不可欠なのは英米のモダニズムと日本の近代化とがいかなる相互交渉を行なったかという歴史的背景の分析であり、特に福澤諭吉や野口米次郎らの環大陸的動向に焦点を定めてきたが、 2020年度にはその文脈の成果として、まず慶應義塾大学アメリカ学会の 2019年 12月の国際シンポジウムを踏まえた論文を同学会の機関誌創刊号に発表したこと、さらに同テーマで日本学術会議が主催した国際シンポジウム「言語・文学委員会 人文学の国際化と日本語文科会」に出席して論考「日英モダニズムの果実」を発表したこと、またそこで得られた見識を世界文学語圏横断ネットワークにおける世界文学シンポジウムで討議することができた。
This project has consistently focused on the transnational literary and cultural negotiations between Euro-American Modernists and Japanese Modernizers, with special emphasis on the figures like Fukuzawa Yukichi and Noguchi Yonejiro. From this perspective this year I could publish a very ambitious article "Transnational American Studies: or, Trans-Atlantic, Trans-Pacific, Trans-Chronological" l in the inaugural issue of the Journal of Keio American Studies(April), delivered a paper on comparative modernism at the international symposium sponsored by Science Council of Japan(July), and discussed the theoretical dimension of World Literature at an interdisciplinary symposium held by Cross-Lingual Network(March 2021). Although COVID-19 prevented me from conducting an extensive research in the United States, the development of ZOOM made it easier for us to have international discussions with Euro-American and Australasian specialists in the field of Modernism and Modernization.
