Abstract
As often mentioned, the United States of America consists of people from various backgrounds, such as ethnic, racial, linguistic, and legal practices. Having lived in Berkeley, California, the author has experienced a miniature America within that state. It was her great pleasure and privilege to be able to witness the historical changes the country had been going through. In order to meet various societal demands, the national and state laws change accordingly. New legislation is being passed to protect everyone's equal opportunities or rights, such as the equal right to marriage, while gun-control legislation remains as a grey area even after a tragedy, such as the shooting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. It is the Constitution and laws that bring people of different briefs and values together. Yet, it is the laws that differentiate the values and justice of people who live in different parts of the country. As technology advances, new types of crimes emerge. It is also the laws that have to confront the dark side of the rapidly changing society. How can a country sustain its morals when people with various motives and directions coexist? We can see a good example in the United States whose people struggle and strive for a better state of the country.
