In the face of intensified technical innovationsand competition among companies, newmeasures for nurturing and managing R&Dpersonnel are being sought. This paper contains(1) a summary analysis of leadingmanufacturers' R&D researchers' awarenessof age-related limitations regarding their researchability; and (2) conclusions, based onthe aforementioned analysis, regarding measuresfor effectively developing the R&Dabilities of such researchers. The analysis isbased on data obtained by the "InternationalComparative Questionnaire Surveys concerningthe Development of the Careers and Abilitiesof R&D Researchers (1989-90)" conductedby the Japan Productivity Center (nowthe Japan Productivity Center for Socio-Economic Development) and two surveys conductedby the Keio University Institute forEconomic and Industrial Studies: "A ResearchProject concerning the Nurturing and Developmentof Personnel for Creative Researchand Development in Japanese Companies: InternationalComparative Surveys concerningthe Opinions of Development Researchers"(1997-8) and "Domestic Surveys concerning the Opinions of Researchers in Basic-ResearchFields" (1994).
