Between the publication of the Considerations on the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans and their Decline (1734) and the publication of The Spirit of the Laws (1748), Montesquieu refined his economic analysis. In The Spirit of the Laws, through an analysis of the history of high rates of interest experienced during the Republican period in Ancient Rome, Montesquieu links the source of Rome's wealth and its mode of distribution with the collapse of its constitution. This paper reveals that the contrast between the modern English constitution and the ancient Roman constitution, both of which are presented in the eleventh book of The Spirit of the Laws, is elaborated from the perspective of two mutually related aspects : on the one hand, a theoretical argument about military and political institutions, and the other, an economic analysis about the transfer and distribution of wealth, including that of land and movable property.
