ミルの社会主義論における主張は、人類の最大幸福という目的(アート)の実現のため、公平なアソシエーションの実験を重ねながら、それと修正資本主義の改良とを比較しつつ選択していこうという比較体制論である。しかし、『経済学原理』第4 編第7 章にミルと違うハリエットの所説が混在しミルの見解として述べられているため、研究者のあいだに誤解が生じている。ミルを社会主義者や修正資本主義者として理解するとミルの思想的特質を失う恐れがある。
J.S. Mill's views on socialism is a system theory with comparative method, which compares different systems of socialism and the reformation of revised capitalism to select the best one, while repeating fair experiments of association to aim at the goal of the gratest happiness of humans (art). 
Because Mill wrote Harriet Taylor's opinions, which different from his own view, in the seventh chapter of the fourth book of Principles of Political Economy, scholars are confused. 
If we regard Mill as a socialist or revised capitalist, we might overlook the characteristics of his thought.
