This article interprets Michael Slote's claim on epistemology as a new kind of an interpersonal view of testimony and clarifies that its implication to the epistemology of testimony is to expand the concept of "epistemic justification" to include an irrational one. He focuses on childhood human learning and argues that children gain knowledge from their parents' testimonies without having any evidence to trust them or considering how reliable they are. They empathetically take in their parents' opinions. For the hearer to come to know what the speaker says, the relationship between both sides is essential. The speaker must show his or her love to the hearer, and the hearer must trust the speaker when shown love. In this respect, Slote's position can be regarded as an interpersonal view of testimony, which stresses that the relationship contributes to epistemic justification. Empathy also plays a part when adults acquire knowledge from others' testimony. To be open-minded, which is widely believed to be an intellectual virtue, one must adopt a favoring attitude toward others with different opinions. However, emotions including love are said to be irrational. Thus, empathy-involving emotions do not epistemically justify any belief based on testimony in the traditional epistemological sense. Slote's point can be interpreted as a proposal that epistemologists should expand the notion of "epistemic justification" if they admit children learn about the world from their parents.
