Abstract
The Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles (1678–82) is an emblematic gallery of the reign of Louis XIV, king of France (r. 1643–1715). There were traditionally several galleries in the French palaces to illustrate the power of the kings and the monarchs. Moreover, galleries of connoisseurs introduced from Italy became fashionable in grand townhouses in Paris at that time. Louis XIV wanted a French gallery in the Palace of Versailles, but no such gallery was built for ten years because the architect was assumed to have insisted on a terrace in the Italian style. Built to replace a large terrace facing the gardens, the Hall of Mirrors achieved a special feature: a link to the gardens. It is certain that the Hall is directly descended from the galleries in other palaces, but it resembles galleries in grand townhouses in this feature. Consequentially, the Hall of Mirrors brought to the Palace not only a French gallery but also a façade in French classical style.
