Abstract |
This paper discusses the depiction of the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Go-Shirakawa on The Rebellions of the Hōgen and Heiji Eras screens kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (hereafter the MET screens). This depiction shares its composition and other characteristics with The Enthronement Ceremony of Empress Meishō held at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (hereafter Nelson-Atkins screens), which portrays the inauguration of Empress Meishō, daughter of Emperor Go-mizunō and granddaughter of Tokugawa Hidetada in 1630. While the MET screens mainly depict military events and the episode of Emperor Go-Shirakawa's enthronement ceremony only plays a minor role in the Tales of Hōgen, the enthronement ceremony and the imperial palace on the MET screens is depicted in such detail that it must have been based on an earlier depiction of an imperial enthronement ceremony. Little is known about the date of the MET screens, but based on my comparison of the two enthronement ceremony scenes, I suggest that the MET screens were painted after 1615, although previous researches has dated them to 1600–1615 based on stylistic characteristics.
