Dragons and Clouds (Kennin-ji Temple) is a typical Momoyama-period set of large screen paintings by the artist Kaihō Yūshō (1533–1615). While most of Yūshō's works have been studied in detail, hardly any research on the oshi-e (pictures with independent compositions pasted onto folding screens) he painted in the final years of his life, during the Keichō era, exists. This paper first discusses the relationship between oshi-e and literature based on an earlier study that argues oshi-e developed from shiga-jiku (hanging scrolls with poem and paintings in ink). Next, it focuses on wakan-renku (linked verse in Japanese and Chinese) practiced at Zen temples and the imperial court during the Momoyama period. Many admirers of Yūshō's work took center stage in these wakan-renku gatherings. Most of them were members of the imperial court, although zen monks and renga (linked verse) poets also participated in these gatherings. Yūshō interacted with them and painted various oshi-e works for them.
