Abstract |
This paper analyzes the attempt of the futurist photographer Anton Giulio Bragaglia (1890–1960) in the context of modernist photography, a movement which became preeminent in interwar period. Bragaglia explains his attempt on Fotodinamiso futurista (Futurist photodynamism), a book he writes himself and which contains his artistic theory and photographic works, and where he criticized the traditional expression of artistic photography called pictorialism. Bragaglia attempted to innovate the photography through the use of a new technique he invented in 1911, named “fotodinamismo”. Since the works of Bragaglia closely resemble those of Edward Muybridge (1830–1904) and Étienne-Jules Marey (1830–1904), previous studies have been considering Bragaglia’s attempt not as a new type of photographic art but simply as a different chronophotographic style. However, it is important to insist on the difference between Bragaglia’s fotodinamismo and other photographic attempts, especially if we look at the procedure and the aim of shooting. This paper aims to prove fotodinamismo as one of the pioneers in the field of modernist photography throughout a careful investigation of Bragaglia’s works and theory.
