Abstract
This paper argues the relationship between "university" and "Deaf culture" in the Deaf President Now (DPN) movement in 1988 at Gallaudet University in the United States. The DPN movement was a human rights movement protesting for the first Deaf president of the university. The movement not only gained respect for American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf people themselves, but also presented to the world Gallaudet University as the center of "Deaf culture" after the movement. However, this was not the origin of Gallaudet University's relationship with "Deaf culture". Gallaudet "University" built its relationship with "Deaf culture" by keeping ASL a teaching language and proving scientifically that ASL was a true language. This historical presence of "Deaf culture" at the university was the backbone of the DPN movement and was the reason why the movement was so influential.
