Abstract |
This paper is an attempt to shed light on the Japanese aesthetic consciousness by examining the theory of "Mono-no-Aware" proposed by Motoori Norinaga (1730–1801). The author believes that in modern occidental culture, the structure of the reflective consciousness that judges what is beautiful is defined by "the logic of action," which is based on the interrelation between the subject and the object. In contrast, the Japanese aesthetic consciousness is defined by "the logic of place," where, under the dominance of "place," the relationship between the subject and the object is reversed.
