Abstract
In this Paper, I try to outline the aesthetic thought on Child Art, represented by Franz Cizek(1865–1946), Roger Fry(1866–1934), and Herbert Read(1893–1968), and endeavor to analyze it in the context of analytic philosophy.
Today we cannot deny the presence of Child Art in the "art world", although it is on the borderline: while there is a case of a successful" child artist "who has achieved an outstanding critical and commercial success, we still cannot but doubt its authenticity. In this paper, I am going to show, by outlining aesthetic thoughts on Child Art by Cizek, Fry and Read, that it is actually an example of Modern formalist/expressionist project, based on the belief in the similarity between Children and Primitives.
If we cannot deny the "artistic provenance" of Child Art, what are the philosophy of art to do with it? I am going to discuss that the theory of "art as practice" will best accommodate Child Art, but in order to capture the actual dynamism of the practice of art, we need to take an interdisciplinary approach, while keeping the fundamental questioning about the origin and value of practice of art itself.
