Abstract |
Richard Serra(1939–), one of the best-known postwar American sculptors produced films and video works. In "Process Sculpture and Film in the Work of Richard Serra"(1978), Benjamin Buchloh acclaimed Serra's early films as "sculptural film" with which the contemporary sculpture comes to a climax. However, Serra has been strongly and repeatedly rejecting this view because the illusion on a flat screen is totally different from the sculptural experience to which actual physical space matters. This paper examines the discrepancy caused by means of the word" sculptural" between the sculptor's attitude and the critic's interpretation. The potential of each medium is essential for Serra's work, rather than mere novelty of an idea.
