Abstract
This paper presents a review and assessment of knowing to explainthe position of cultural literacy from the viewpoint of "knowingthat" and "knowing how". The existing knowing understanding ofcultural literacy is criticized by critical literacy, but it will bechanged by using the interpretations of comparison between culturalliteracy of E. D. Hirsch, Jr. and critical literacy. In the first part ofthis paper, a review of cultural literacy and critical literacy will bedescribed. The second and third section, will analyze Hirsch's understandingof knowing contrasted with that of critical literacy theoryfrom the framework of "knowing that" and "knowing how". Finally,this paper concludes with a discussion about new interpretationabout "knowing how" of cultural literacy, and its effect to critical literacyon "knowing that".
