Abstract |
Folklorist Yanagita Kunio, said to be the founder of folklore in Japan, left a lot of suggestive works in not only folklore but also pedagogy. He accepted and advocated the value of the early modern education, especially folk-narrative, and then criticized an inclination not to acknowledge the existence of the early modern education because of thinking that "education" began in the modern age.
It is considered that his educational theory changed greatly in the 1900s. When he was an offcial of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, he seemed to try to have a civilizing influence on farmers in his agricultural education. It was closely similar to the modern education. However, in the 1910s and later, he gave it up and started to educate young people in a different way. He encouraged them to learn their local history. It is needed to make clear whether his educational theory changed or not, and the sequence between those two education.
