Abstract |
This paper compares "De Magistro" which was written in the period of communal life in Tagaste, and "Epistola VII" which was addressed to Nebridius. And thereby it tries to deal with the relationship between the Reminiscence and the Illumination theory in the view of philosophy of education.
Adoption of Illumination theory in "De Magistro" would be due to obscurity of the whole image of form which should be acquired through the internal recall after introduction of sensory experience to the concept of sign of the Reminiscence that would prompt internal recall by dialectic. The divine truth is only one and man cannot grasp the whole truth through the empirical recognition, for the human knowledge could always reveal only a part of the truth. Meanwhile "Epistola VII" describes the realistic epistemology that says it's impossible to grasp the knowable thing unless man should have the ability of a sensory after the incarnation because he could not acknowledge the form without sensory comprehension even with the Illumination. Reinterpretation of "De Magistro" in the context of "Epistola VII" reveals the position of sensory recognition in the Illumination theory. That is to say, perception of material things by the medium of sign is necessary to obtain the truth. The partial recognition obtained through internal reminiscence should be built into a whole form under the divine Illumination.
