J. S. Mill' hedonism introduced the view that there are different qualities of pleasures into Bentham's utilitarianism. But he made a further view concerning pleasures. In order to clarify his view I argue that (1) In his view various pleasures can be classified into three departments corresponding to three departments of "Art of Life": Morality, Prudence or Policy, and Aesthetics, (2) values of pleasures are ordered according to the degree of contributions to the "sense of dignity" and development of "individuality". "Sense of dignity" is "the feeling of personal exaltation and degradation which acts independently of people's opinion, or even in defiance of it". Individuality has at least five aspects that are (a) self-affnity, (b) self-control, (c) harmony, (d) development of human faculties, and (e) energy.
