Abstract |
This paper examines how the MAC (Maryknoll Alcohol Center) that rehabilitates alcoholics refer them to the self-help group AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) after their discharge, by comparing structural characteristics of the MAC with that of the AA. Alcoholics tend to deny that they are an alcoholic, to hold feelings of dislike or disbelief for the doctrines of AA and the Mac, and to develop untreated characteristics, causing them to keep distance from, and/ or never participate again in the AA meetings. Though the MAC and the AA have similar programs, they differ in structural characteristics including attribution of members to the group, division of roles in the group and whether built-in institution or not. Because of these different structural characteristics, the MAC is able to improve the life style of alcoholics and transforms their recognition about relationship of alcohol with oneself, thus helping alcoholics in denial to attend the AA meetings. The MAC program improves the life style of alcoholics and transforms their recognition about relationship of alcohol with oneself that is necessary for attend in AA. The AA n Japan is more readily available to certain alcoholics because of the support provided by the MAC.
