The purpose of this study is to explain the historical development of pedagogical education in Keio University. Keio University was inaugurated through the promulgation of "Daigakurei" (1918). And pedagogical education started as the Department of Pedagogy was established.
Concretely speaking, this paper examines 1) what curriculum did the Department of Pedagogy have, 2) what kind of subjects were there, 3) who were in charge of those subjects, 4) what relevance did pedagogical education have to teacher training (especially the teachers exam in secondary education).
In conclusion, Sumie Kobayashi, who was known as an introducer of "Arbeitserziehung" in the educational world in Japan at that time, took the lead in pedagogical education at Keio University. Kobayashi had the chair of "Kyouikugaku", "Kyouikushi" and "Kyouikugakushi" in the Department of Pedagogy.
In addition, it is important to comprehend the actual state of pedagogical education at Keio University, which was the first elevated to the status of a private university, in order to clarify the trend of pedagogical education at a private university in modern Japan.
