Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how pedagogy became included in the curriculum in the early Keio University. It is in 1885 that we can first find a pedagogy related class, Kyoikuron-kogi, at Keio. This class was a reading class in English using the works of Spencer. Until now, the role of teacher training has been exaggerated in the process of the formation of pedagogy in modern Japan. However, it was revealed that pedagogy-related classes at Keio were not necessarily regarded as teacher training, but as a domain of practical studies which should be taught at a modern educational institution.
The drastic educational reform in Keio at that time contained not only refinement of the curriculum, but also searching for a method of teaching suited for increasing in the number of students.
Taking account of above conditions at Keio, we can understand why pedagogy appeared in the curriculum as the process of conversion from a private academy, shijuku, to a modern school.
