Abstract |
The Alkibiades 1 is a rich but vastly underappreciated dialogue in educational studies. It offers a positive exemple of Socratic educational method and it then substantiates the effectiveness of Socratic midwifery (maieutic) strategy for the education. For this reason, this dialogue warrants close attention. Socrates utilizes a Alkibiades' unabashed desire for domination as a catalyst in his maieutic approach.
In this article, I will show that Socratic conversation with the young Alkibiades transforms Alkibiades' self-awareness convincing him that he must take more trouble over himself if he desires to advise the Athenian citizen about its political affaires. Also I will focus on Socratic approach that the conversation will be to elaborate the Socratic educational aim of taking trouble over oneself.
In the first part of this article, I will concentrate on the maieutic process in Alkibiades 1. Here we reach the core of the dialogue that 'taking trouble over oneself' is said to yield selfknowledge, which implies soundmindedness (sophrosune). In the second part, I will suggest some problem in this dialogue which is pararell to the Meno. In the third part, I will conclude that the educational essence in the Alkibiades 1 is to encorage people to dicipline oneself and to control oneself by self-criticism.
