Abstract |
The present study examined Japanese-learning infants' ability to segment words from fluent speech, using the head-turn preference procedure. In the training phase, infants were familiarized with two target words. In the test phase, they were presented with passages which either included or did not include the familiar target words embedded in sentences. The Japanese 6- to 12- month-old infants listened significantly longer to the passages containing the familiar target words. The result suggests that Japanese-learning infants may be segment words from fluent speech. On the other hand, developmental change in infants' preferences for the passages containing the familiar target words was not observed.
