Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the role of political conception of the person in Rawls's political liberalism and explore how his theory can handle the diversity of human beings. I will discuss that in his political liberalism 1) the parties in the original position, 2) the citizens in the political domain i.e. the political conception of the person and 3) the people in the background culture can be distinguished. The parties in the original position are "artificial creatures" whereas 2) and 3) are two different sides of an individual. The political conception of the person supports Rawls's egalitarian liberalism while answering the question of stability. At the end I will show briefly that when we take account of the two different sides of the individual, Rawls's theory can be extended to take people's diversity into consideration.
