Abstract
What is the capacity of literary text to transmit the memory of wartime? We make an inquiry of the question through reading a short novel written by Shun Medoruma: Denreihei (Messenger). To present the memory of battlefield evoked vividly even now in Okinawa, this novel makes appear a ghost of a young soldier killed in war, the head brown off probably by a shellburst. On the one hand, this figure functions as an allegory suggesting political situations imposed on Okinawa. On the other hand, it produces the reality effect (effet de reel) and demands readers to conceive in imagination the experiences of the personages. It is through the literary effects that the text opens a circuit to the memory of others.
