Abstract |
Shigeki Nishimura is known as an enlightenment thinker in the Meiji Restoration. On the one hand, he introduced the western civilization with Yukichi Fkuzawa and other enlightenment thinkers. On the other hand, he argued that Confucianism should be used for moral education. The purpose of this study is to search the ground why Nishimura who was familiar with the learning of the west argued it. Before The Imperial Rescript of Education was promulgated, he sought a standard of moral education in Japan. He required it should be established through his lectures and books again and again. After The Imperial Rescript of Education was promulgated, he regarded it as the standard of moral education and thought Confucianism as the best method for practicing it. One of the reasons was Confucianism had cultivated Japanese dignity since early times. Another was it had a concept of Jitoku that joined a learning to a body. From these reasons, he thought it was fit as the method.
