Abstract |
Among a lot of means of preparing for the entrance examination, preparatory schools for the entrance examination (yobiko) developed in modern Japan. This paper investigates the comments on this kind of schools described in the magazines on the entrance examination and the guidebooks on the advanced schools. 1-year preparatory schools came into being in 1900 s. A number of students went to this kind of schools, nevertheless they were recognized as profit-making schools and assemblies of the failures, that is as necessary evil. As the entrance examination became harsh, preparatory schools were accepted and considered as the best way to the passage of the entrance examination. In 1930 s supplementary courses (hoshu-ka) of the middle schools were taken notice of as a new type of preparatory schools, though from Meiji era on this course was one of the means of preparing for the entrance examination. The rise of supplementary courses signified the decline of the old rude preparatory schools and the beginning of the control in the preparatory education. This control included the regular presence at the lectures and the continuous guidance from the teachers.
