Abstract |
In the final proof of the immortality of soul in Phaedo, in what sense does Plato prove that the soul is immortal? This paper tries to elucidate the following three points concerning the soul through an interpretation of Plato's argument about the immanent Forms: 1) The Form "life" and the Form "death" are opposite, and exclude each other. 2) If any Form always brings "life" with it, then it is the Form "soul". 3) Even if "death" approaches to "soul", "soul" never admits "death" by virtue of the mutual exclusion between "life" and "death". From the above three points, we conclude that Plato establishes the essential and inseparable connection of "soul" and "life", and that he proves the soul is wholly immortal in this sense.
