| 抄録 |
'Terakoya' was one of primary schools in Tokugawa Japan. This name alluder to its relation to the 'Tera' (temple). This paper will treat of the following. (1) How were the historical circulstances and the contents of the secular education in japanese temples of the Middle ages which was thought to make a pre-history of the 'Terakoya'? (2) When we define that the 'Terakoya' is 'one of educational institutions for the common people' -this definition is adopted by many scholars of the history of education in Japan-, should we say either that the origin was the temples alone or that the origin was composed of plural educational institutions contained the temples? I will introduce a dispute over this problem. (3) How was the appearance of 'Terakoya' and the other words related to it in the literature?
