「起原」の考究は歴史家にとって、魅力のある問題である。慶応義塾の発祥と由来との考察は、一世紀にわたる歴史の全体に光を投ずるほどの意義をもっているようにみえる。また将来のことを考える参考にもなる。慶応義塾の起原を究明するに当って、次の二つの方向から進んでみたい。一つは、いかなる歩み出しをしたかという発端の問題、二つには、いかにして現在あるが如きものになったかという由来の問題。
Historical events and things have their origin and cause. Historians always wish to know them. Keio University was founded in 1858; it has the honourable history of a century as one of the oldest schools in modern Japan. The present thesis aims to inqiere into how it was established one hundred years ago, when Japan opened her door to the European countries, and how it became what it is in the middle of the twentieth century in which we live.
