Abstract
C. Carrothers was the first foreign teacher at Keio Gijuku. He was appointed in June 1872 (the 5th year of Meiji) and for one year taught mainly English and English Literature to the senior students who were themselves partly teaching in the school. This article deals with the influence of Carrothers upon Keio Gijuku and its students while he was teaching here. He did not influence the school and students so far as his lectures were concerned. However, I can mention the fact that his extracurricular religious activities had a small influence upon some of the students. The greatest influence he had was in changing the system of the courses of studies. In 1874 (the 6th year of Meiji), Keio Gijuku rearranged the courses through his advice and adopted the 7-year-course system following the American educational practice. This system became the basis of the new system which, although it was amended from time to time, continued till the first semester 1897 (the 30th year of Meiji). On the character and tradition of Keio Gijuku, I can say that he had no great influence. I think this was partly because Carrothers was not a great scholar of personality and partly because of the greatness of Keio Gijuku's school character and tradition which had been begun by Yukichi Fukuzawa and which could not be changed by one single teacher.
