The paper aims to clarify how we can understand "tact" in the workplace as emotional labor. The research on emotional labor, beginning with the work of A.R. Hochschild, has focused on interaction with customers and pointed out the control exerted by corporations. However, the scenes where we have to manipulate emotions and adjust behavior may not be limited to only when interacting with customers. In fact, the concept of emotional labor has spread in recent years. In other words, the so-called "salaryman's tact" performed when interacting with superiors or colleagues in daily life at work is considered to include opportunities for emotional work. The paper reconsiders the concept of emotional labor by elucidating how one can understand the meaning of tact in the workplace as emotional labor.
The study provides examples of discourses about tact as described in President (President, Inc.) and BIG tomorrow (Seishun Shuppan, Inc.), which are popular business magazines in Japan. Analysis reveals that the tact, as described in the said business magazines, includes deep acting in the meaning of "acting authenticity." Therefore, tact is indeed emotional labor when viewed from such an aspect. Furthermore, tact has the potential to promote self-reflexivity.
