Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current situation and issues at Gallaudet University in accordance with the institution's history. Gallaudet University has continued to provide liberal arts education and degrees such as B.A. and B.S. for deaf and hard-of-hearing students for over 150 years. The historical background and the meaning of the institution providing liberal arts for deaf and hard-of-hearing students are clarified. Furthermore, the present situation and issues that characterize Gallaudet as a liberal arts university are considered.
The results revealed that Gallaudet should examine whether the institution is primarily a university or a cultural center for the Deaf community. In order for Gallaudet to function as a cultural center for the Deaf community and function as a higher education institution, the institution should actively engage in its educational contents of liberal arts and re-evaluate its B.A. and B.S. degrees as a liberal arts university.
