An individual's self-consciousness increases considerably during adolescence. Furthermore, self-consciousness is known to be closely related to young people's psychological adaptation and self-formation. Therefore, it was considered important to investigate the positive self-consciousness of adolescents. A revised self-consciousness scale was developed by subdividing private self-consciousness and public selfconsciousness ; adding to the concept of public and private self-consciousness. Subsequently, its correlations with self-esteem and depression were examined in university student participants (N＝460, 121 men and 339 women). Factor analysis was conducted on 60 items and the Self-Consciousness Scale-Revised consisting of four factors (appearance consciousness, public and private self-consciousness, private self-consciousness, style consciousness) and 29 items was developed. The internal consistency of the scale was confirmed based on coefficient alpha (α=.77～.88), itemtotal correlation and good-poor analysis. Furthermore, the factorial validity of the scale was established through confirmatory factor analysis. Gender differences suggested that women had higher appearance consciousness, public and private selfconsciousness and style consciousness than males. Furthermore, participants with higher style consciousness had lower self-esteem and higher depression. The excessive consciousness of evaluation by others is considered to cause problems. On the other hand, participants with high public and private self-consciousness showed less depression. It is suggested that self-consciousness in relationships with others might reduce depression. Finally, in the study, the limitations of this study and future directions are discussed.
