This thesis clarifies how the education for the entrance exam to advanced schools developed in a local area focusing on the hoshu-ka (supplementary course) and Yobikyoiku-koshujo (preparatory school) founded in Miyazaki Middle School.
Students who go on to advanced schools from Miyazaki prefecture were considered fewer than those from neighboring prefectures. This was made an issue in the foundation of Yobi-kyoiku-koshujo. It was one of the solutions to the issue, however, it survived only for one year.
Hoshu-ka's curriculum contained English, mathematics, kokugo-oyobi-kanbun (Japanese and Chinese classics), physics, chemistry and natural history. And again, there was a discussion of adding history and geography to the hoshu-ka's curriculum in the Meiji era. But after 1922 subjects in the curriculum was decreased to three: English, mathematics and kokugo-oyobi-kanbun. Students couldn't pass the entrance exam because most advanced schools assigned in the entrance exam more than three subjects above mentioned.
Hoshu-ka in Miyazaki Middle School didn't respond sufficiently to the demand of the student who hoped for going on to an advanced school. Some students passed the entrance exam by withdrawing the hoshu-ka in Miyazaki Middle School and reentering other preparatory school in Tokyo etc.
