This study aims to analyze internet BBS to explore the deliberative democratic potential of online political discussion. The deliberative democratic potential is assessed from two dimensions: Individuality dimension which is related to one's competence to speak his or her opinion and civility dimension which is related to one's competence to understand others' opinion. The former is measured with argument repertoire which represents the number of reasons in one's argument and the latter is measured with the way of speaking (polite/casual/impolite) which represents one's attitude toward others.
The main results are, 1) messages assumed to contribute to discussion development and messages of which the contents are not impolite show more sophistication in terms of argument repertoire and the length of the messages than messages assumed to inhibit discussion development and messages of which the contents are impolite, 2) the messages whose writers have participated the discussion more are less impolite than the messages whose writers have participated the discussion less.
These results suggest that the individuality dimension and civility dimension of deliberative democracy are closely interrelated, and the internet BBS could be a place where the participants could learn individuality dimension and especially civility dimension of deliberative democracy.
