Abstract
In FY 2020, the Keio Research Center for Foreign Language Education, in cooperation with junior high schools and high schools in Kanagawa Prefecture, conducted a "Foreign Language Education Project to Foster the Competencies Required in a Globalized Society" to research methods of foreign language education consistent with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's the Course of Study (amended 2018). The Course of Study focuses on the three competencies (knowledge and skills-related competencies, thinking ability, and motivation to learn), coverage of receptive and production skills, and the use of methods that promote deep learning. Through Backward Design principles, a curriculum consistent with the Guidelines was designed. The curriculum included one-year teaching objectives and teaching objectives for the three competencies. Performance tasks and performance evaluation rubrics were designed for each unit. The researchers created a format for the input of the above information to facilitate the design of teaching plans with the stated characteristics. The seven educators participating in the project produced lesson plans based on the above framework for lessons in Korean, Spanish, Chinese, German and French. Lessons incorporating the performance tasks were then provided.
