Abstract |
This paper describes an online course for elementary and intermediate Chinese learners that I conducted as a part-time instructor in 2020. Because of the special circumstances of the coronavirus disease pandemic, I developed a low-cost interactive course through bricolage of learning management systems and social network sites familiar to students. Specifically, the majority of the teaching materials were presented on the Moodle platform, and anonymous questions were accepted from students via Google Form, which were then answered for all students using the Open Chat function of LINE. In addition, for some classes, Zoom was effectively used to conduct one-on-one oral exams with students, and the breakout room function was used to allow students who tended to be isolated to interact with each other. In order to keep this system running for a year, I had to work from early morning to late at night every day, which may not be a sustainable method. However, a part-time lecturer like myself, who could not invest money in equipment or get help from teaching assistants, was able to make the best use of limited resources to continue the students' learning and greatly contribute to the improvement of their Chinese language skills during the pandemic.
